Justice and Law

Recent reports from the cognitive developmental science gained increasing attention in the domains of legal theory and practice with regard to the culpability and blameworthiness of adolescents. Incorporating these findings into the legal milieu, however, remains largely abstract and controversial. Together with members of my laboratory (e.g., Irina Demacheva), we designed a survey to assess knowledge, attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of legal professionals, developmental researchers, and mental health practitioners about recent scientific findings and their implications for the Youth Criminal Justice System. Our findings shed considerable light on the different views held by these professionals and will likely help shape legislative guidelines on the culpability of youth.
